Payment Gateway → Acquiring Bank → Card Network → Issuing Bank → Decision

At each step, systems are asking:

Does this transaction look risky?

Is this business compliant?

Does the data match expected behaviour?

If anything feels “off,” the payment is declined—often without a clear reason.

The 5 Hidden Reasons Your Payments Are Getting Declined

1. You’re Categorised as High-Risk (Even If You’re Legit)

Industries like crypto, forex, iGaming, CBD, and subscription-based services are under heavier scrutiny than ever.

What this means:
Even good transactions can get blocked simply because of your business model.

Quick fix:
Work with payment partners who specialise in high-risk verticals—not general providers.

2. Your Transaction Data Isn’t Strong Enough

In 2026, data is everything. Weak or inconsistent data increases your risk score instantly.

Common issues:

Missing IP or device data

Billing mismatches

Thin customer profiles

Quick fix:
Upgrade your checkout to capture and pass richer, cleaner data.

3. Fraud Filters Are Too Aggressive

AI fraud systems are designed to block threats—but they often block real customers too.

Example:
A genuine customer using a VPN or making a large first-time purchase gets declined.

Quick fix:
Fine-tune fraud settings and introduce smarter decisioning—not blanket rules.

4. You’re Relying on a Single Payment Processor

This is one of the most expensive mistakes businesses make.

Transaction → Processor A → Declined ❌ → Sale Lost

Now compare that to a smarter setup:

Transaction → Processor A → Declined
                        ↓
                 Processor B → Approved ✅

Quick fix:
Implement multi-processor routing to recover lost transactions.

5. You’re Not Fully Aligned With 2026 Regulations

Compliance is no longer optional—it’s automated and enforced in real time.

If your setup doesn’t meet evolving standards (KYC, AML, SCA), transactions get blocked instantly.

Quick fix:
Align your payment infrastructure with current regulatory expectations without hurting conversions.

The Real Cost of Doing Nothing

Most businesses underestimate how much revenue they’re losing.

Even a small drop in approval rates can have a major impact:

10% decline rate → 10% lost revenue

High-risk businesses often lose 20–40% of potential transactions

Poor setups compound losses over time

This isn’t just a technical issue—it’s a growth bottleneck.

A Simple Framework to Fix Payment Declines Fast

Here’s what high-performing businesses are doing differently:

1. Multi-Processor Setup

They don’t rely on one provider—they build redundancy.

2. Smart Routing

Transactions are dynamically sent to the processor most likely to approve them.

3. Data Optimisation

Every transaction carries rich, structured data to reduce risk flags.

4. Fraud Intelligence (Not Just Filters)

They reduce fraud without blocking legitimate customers.

5. Compliance by Design

Their systems are built to meet regulatory expectations from the start.

Where Most Businesses Get It Wrong

They try to fix declines inside a broken system.

Switching one provider for another rarely solves the problem. What’s needed is a payment architecture strategy not a patch.

Thanks for reading Aquira's Substack! mentioned, risk-based pricing gives the risk assessment of high-risk transactions that make them appear illegal. In simple terms, risk-base pricing is; the price of a financial service changes depending on how risky the client is. Naturally, this occurs when high-risk merchants who process payment give cost exposure to capital providers, regulatory capital or overall uncertainty in day-to-day operations. Causing the fee of risk-based pricing on a high-risk merchant to be a higher than usual. Its the same when a risky borrower pays higher interest or a volatile trader pays a higher margin, there is a higher risk involved in their operations due to increased exposure.

Further, risk based pricing exists as financial markets operate on expected value and probability of loss. So, each financial institution asks, how much they could lose or how much capital it must reserve. From this, pricing is constructed, in terms of payment acquiring for high-risk merchants, this translate into; higher chargebacks fees, tighter settlement terms and rolling reserves. As the acquire is effectively extending short-term credit on every transaction. They are guaranteeing the funds before the final settlement risk is fully resolved.

The Economics behind Risk-Based Pricing

Let’s get a little technical here. We will now briefly discuss the theory and economics of risk based pricing so that you, my fellow reader, have much better understanding of how price exposure assessments are made by financial institutions.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Credits: AI Generated

Risk-based pricing is grounded in formal credit risk theory. At its core lies the concept of expected loss, the statistically anticipated financial exposure associated with a give client relationship.

Expected Loss (EL) = Probability of Default (PD) x Loss Given Default

Probability of Default (PD) represents the likelihood that a loss event will occur. in card acquiring, this may not mean traditional insolvency, but rather operational or transactional failure, seen through things like excessive chargebacks, fraud escalation, regulatory intervention, or settlement collapse.

Loss Given Default (LGD) measures the severity of that loss if the vent occurs, including unrecoverable disputes, fraud exposure, fines or unsettled balances, Financial institutions use this expected loss framework to determine the minimum compensation required for taking on risk. However, the expected loss alone does not determine price. Institutions must also account for:

The cost of capital required to support risk exposure

Operational costs such as fraud monitoring and compliance

A required profit margin

Hence, this can be summarised as

Price = Expected Loss + Cost of capital + Operational Cost + Profit Margin

Importantly, pricing is also influenced by information asymmetry. Merchants typically possess more information about their operational quality and traffic sources than acquirers do. This uncertainty increases perceived risk and therefore pricing.

To prevent adverse selection — where only the riskiest merchants seek approval, acquirers adjust pricing upward for higher-risk categories. While economically rational, this process can sometimes lead to category-wide premiums that exceed measured risk at the individual merchant level.

This is where payments advisors such as Aquira can step in and aid in the onboarding and approval of high-risk merchants. Aquira swiftly and effectively finds the lowest processing fees and quickest approval times for high-risk merchants anywhere in the world.

Future Angle: AI and Dynamic Risk Pricing

Here at Aquira, we are constantly thinking of the future and what’s to come next. Merchants were often assigned to risk tiers based on vertical, geography, or perceived exposure, with pricing reviewed periodically rather than continuously.Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing this structure.

AI-driven underwriting enables acquirers to assess risk using granular behavioural data rather than categorical assumptions. Machine learning models analyse transaction velocity, device fingerprinting, geographic inconsistencies, behavioural anomalies, and historical dispute trends in real time. This shifts risk evaluation from static classification to probabilistic modelling.

Real-time risk scoring further transforms the system. Instead of reacting to chargeback ratios after thresholds are breached, AI systems can detect emerging patterns before they escalate. Fraud clusters, velocity anomalies, and suspicious customer behaviour can be flagged dynamically, allowing intervention at the transaction level.

This creates the potential for dynamic pricing models. In theory, fees, reserves, and settlement conditions could adjust based on live performance metrics. Merchants demonstrating strong operational control and low dispute velocity may benefit from more favourable terms, even within traditionally high-risk sectors.

However, the same technology introduces a critical tension.

As underwriting becomes more precise, tolerance for volatility may decline. AI reduces information asymmetry, but it also enables faster decision-making. Approval thresholds may tighten. Termination decisions may become automated. Marginal risk profiles may be excluded more quickly than before.

The question is therefore not whether AI will change risk-based pricing, it already is. The question is whether it will make the system more proportionate and data-driven, or more selective and restrictive.

Conclusion

Risk-based pricing has always been an economic response to uncertainty. As artificial intelligence reduces that uncertainty, pricing should, in theory, become more aligned with measurable performance rather than broad industry labels. Yet precision cuts both ways.

In a world of AI-driven underwriting, merchants will no longer be judged primarily by category, but by data. Operational discipline, fraud controls, refund velocity, and dispute management will become central determinants of cost and access.

The future of high-risk payments will not be defined by who operates in a risky sector, but by who manages risk intelligently.

As pricing models become dynamic, the competitive advantage will belong to merchants who understand the economics behind them and structure their payment infrastructure accordingly

Thanks for reading Aquira's Substack! payments are being reversed compared to how many payments you process. The word ‘chargeback’ in this instance, literally means to send the money back to the initial sender. This ratio gives those assessing the payment transaction, a rough idea of how ‘risky’ they are or more simpler, how many times payments are returned back to the issuer.

For understanding the chargeback ratio, it’s best to know how to calculate it as well. We can calculate it as:

100 / 10,000 = 1%, hence the chargeback ratio is 1%

The chargeback ratio is important for a variety of reasons. Most importantly, as just mentioned, it allows monitoring of the transactions. Card networks like Visa and Mastercard monitor transactions to understand the risk levels of transactions depending where the chargeback ratio sits according to their different thresholds.

Typically the thresholds tend to be:

0.9%-1% - Warning level

1%+ - Monitoring Program

1.8% - excessive risk level (possible termination)

Therefore, merchants that are deemed “high-risk”, are effectively in the ‘danger zone’ when it comes to their payment systems being operational. If a merchant begins to experience a higher or an increasing chargeback ratio, the merchant risks fines, higher processing fees and account termination.

On the other hand, with Aquira high-risk merchants no longer need to worry about account termination or compliance issues. Aquira efficiently and effectively links high risk merchants to relevant PSPs creating a swift and easy integrated payment system into the merchants existing payment infrastructure.

A Chargeback is NOT a refund

At the surface level, both result in money going back to the customer. But operationally and legally, they are completely different things.

A refund is when a customer directly contacts the merchants to ask for money to be returned. The merchant agrees and sends money back through the payment processor. Key things to note here, a refund does not damage the merchant’s chargeback ratio and the transaction stays inside the merchant-processor relationship, with no penalty from card networks.

However, with the chargeback the customer bypasses the merchant, they contact their bank(issuer) directly which makes the card networks steps in as mediator. This creates a formal dispute inside the card network, causing all sorts of issues, most pressingly, the monitoring of payment transactions.

Another key feature of difference here is that the chargeback is much more expensive than a refund. Whilst revenue is returned albeit with a small fee to the merchant in a refund. A chargeback, charges a fee, a possible fine from acquirer, plus the ratio increase and a risk of account termination is possible. Making the chargeback a lot more of damaging stat for high-risk merchant operation.

Hence, for high-risk merchants there is higher emphasis on chargeback ratios rather than refund volume, as preventing chargebacks is not just about saving revenue, it is about protecting the ability to process payments at all.

The Death Spiral Trap for High-Risk Merchants

Knowing all this, it is becoming clearer why the chargeback is not just a cost problem but a structural survival problem. This the so-called ‘death spiral’ which happens when rising chargebacks trigger defensive reactions from acquirers and those reactions make the merchants situation worse and worse.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

In simplest economic terms, here how the chargeback ‘death spiral’ is not inevitable. It usually happens when merchants scale revenue faster than they scale payment infrastructure and risk control.

This is where Aquira plays a strategic role.

Aquira does not simply “find an acquirer.” We focus on building payment stability before problems escalate.

Structured Onboarding to Avoid Early Risk Triggers

Many merchants enter high-risk processing with poorly positioned applications or incomplete risk framing. This often results in fragile approvals and tight reserve structures.

Aquira helps merchants:

Present clean operational data

Structure billing descriptors properly

Align refund policies with network expectations

Prepare documentation that reduces perceived risk

Reducing perceived risk at onboarding reduces aggressive pricing and excessive reserves from day one.

Summary

In conclusion a chargeback ratio is not just a technical metric buried inside a processor dashboard, it is a direct indicator of payment health, operational discipline, and long-term processing stability.

For high-risk merchants in particular, this ratio determines far more than dispute volume. It influences pricing, reserve requirements, settlement speed, and ultimately whether a business can continue to process card payments at all. When managed proactively, it becomes a performance indicator. When ignored, it can quickly evolve into a structural risk.

In our experience as an advisory payment firm we see how merchants who treat chargeback management as a strategic priority, rather than a reactive compliance task are much better in positioning themselves for stability, stronger negotiating power with acquirers, and sustainable growth in increasingly AI-driven payment environments.

SEND US A MESSAGE BELOW IF YOU THINK AQUIRA CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS

Thanks for reading Aquira's Substack! Gaming experiences have been integrated into day-to-day education, gym equipment and even some workplaces. Upcoming 2026 games such as GTA IV, Marvel’s Wolverine or Resident Evil: Requiem generate unprecedented hype amongst not just their respective fanbases but the broader general public. But are these games ready for payment industry trends that are taking peak in 2026

Lets dive in an explore together this question at hand.

1.Steady Growth has Shifted Industry Focus

Firstly, the global gaming industry is no longer in the acceleration phase, as it once was in the early 1990s and 2000s. Instead it has entered a period of structural maturity, where the size of the market doesn’t actually matter, yet, it’s more the composition of growth within that market that gaming companies choose to pursue.

According to projections from Newzoo, global games revenues are expected to reach approximately $188.8 billion in 2025 compared to a similar figure of $184 billion in 2022. Despite this being roughly 1-2% average annual growth, it appears extremely modest compared to the 20% surges seen initially as late as 2020s during lockdown.

With this, rather than focusing in obtaining an explosive new user acquisition, the industry is increasingly shaped by the following:

Platform cycles (amount of console refreshes, Pc hardware upgrades, mobile ecosystem shifts)

Richness of Content

Franchise Strength

Monetisation sophistication

Operational efficiency in payments and retention

Hence, it is key for firms to nail down the content but also efficient payment infrastructure. A mature market will give a firm incremental gains in monetisation efficiency that compounds faster than incremental gains in user acquisition. Overall operators and investors are said to priories the following:

Lifetime Value (LTV)

Conversion rate

Retention metrics

Payment acceptance performance

This directly ties back to where payment infrastructure becomes a key indicator in outperforming competitors but also gain backing in projects in 2026. In other words, growth is no longer seen as scale only. It is how intelligently that scale is monetised.

2. Mobile Monetisation Remains Central

The accessibility of mobile games, makes their competitiveness in the gaming industry central to anyone looking to get downloads or exposure as wide as possible. The BCG ( Boston Consulting Group) estimated that mobile in-app purchases in 2025 were at nearly $130 billion, roughly half of the global gaming industry revenue, illustrating the how mobile games have still remained core.

Mobile monetisation will continue to remain central to the gaming industry success, however, it is suggested that the so called ‘next era’ is going to be shaped regulatory pressures that will open new paths to alternative payments, side loading, and new checkout models.

Yet again, payment strategies will come into play for mobile games, where competitive advantage will be created in the following:

Better conversion through local payment methods

Smarter routing to improve authorisation rates

Lower fees via optimised acquiring/payment orchestration

Therefore, it can be seen that some firms have started to introduces games into the Appstore that were originally seen on console or PC only. Games such as Red Dead Redemption, Bully and even GTA San Andreas, shows the response of companies understanding mobile monetisation and mobile downloads are central to success in 2026.

3. High Risk Transaction Niche Growing

The gaming merchants such as online, digital goods and certain gambling-adjacent models are routinely treated as ‘high risk’ by acquirers due to:

Friendly fraud (customers disputing after receiving value)

Account takeover/ stolen credentials

Bonus abuse and refund loops

Cross-border risk + regulatory sensitivity

According to Datos Insights, expects global chargeback volume to grow 24% from 2025 to 2028, reaching 324 million transactions annually. Firms operating in these high risk niches have an opportunity to expand and grow by understanding the problem. The problem here is more of a unit economics problem. For example, if disputes rise with the payments, your true cost isn’t only the refund, its fees, lost product, operational time, and sometimes higher reserves of pricing from your acquirer.

Setup For Success

In Pactical terms, to succeed as a gaming merchant in 2026, you should ideally look to create setups of payment systems built around three goals:

Maximise acceptance: strong acquiring coverage, intelligent routing, local methods and clean data to issuers

Minimise disputes: friction-right authentication, fraud tooling, clear descriptors, strong support flows and dispute strategy.

Project cashflow: predictable settlements, sensible reserves and redundancy

The AI Question

In conclusion, AI is increasingly embedded in issuer decisioning and merchant-side fraud systems. The real question for 2026 is:

Will AI increase approval rates by distinguishing good customers from bad more accurately - or will it tighten risk models and make ‘borderline’ merchants harder to board ?

Either way, gaming operators that treat payments + risk as a product system will compound an advantage.

Thanks for reading Aquira's Substack!

Institutions such as the World Bank and the Bank for International Settlements consistently highlight that efficient systems increase market participation, improve economic resilience and reduce transaction costs. Here we will discuss 3 critical reasons why payment infrastructure matters far more than you think in developing economies.

1. Reduction of Friction, Unlocking Economic Capability

In developing markets, the importance of shifting to reliable digital payments is paramount. Without a payment infrastructure, local businesses significantly hinder their ability to grow. Business face significant barriers to scale, limited geographic reach and delayed settlements leading to operational inefficiencies.

According to the IMF (International Monetary Fund), digital payments contribute to increased formalisation of economic activity - broadening tax bases and improving capital allocation.

2. Business Stability

Secondly, developing economies tend to have high volatility, be it political or economic stability. Hence, when you put on top of this, a faltering payment infrastructure, in forms of: settlement delays, frozen account or unstable acquiring relationships. Businesses and overall economic activity can cripple.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"

Improved fraud monitoring

Reduced dependancy on cash

Predictable settlement cycles

This circles back to the merchants who seek stable payment solutions, to continue operation and outreach for demand, which in turn drives business incentives such as profit and R&D innovation, aiding economic activity.

3. Cross Border Growth

Whilst stabilising their domestic market, merchants will eventual seek to become part of global commerce. Globalisation through improved payment infrastructure has been a game changer for the global economy and one that would be to good to ignore. Modern international acquiring payment infrastructure allows business to:

Accept international cards

Settle in multiple currencies

Optimise approval rates

Manager chargeback risk

Without these crucial global payment infrastructure, global expansion only remains theoretical for a developing economy. Hence it is heavily encouraged for nations to globalise and begin cross border growth, helping drive exports and exposure in global commerce.

Overall, as a brief overview of the importance of payment infrastructure in developing economies, it is seen they are the invisible backbone of economic activity. Payment infrastructure is not simply about accepting transactions. It is about enabling commerce, reducing systemic risk, and creating the condition for sustainable growth.

Future of Payment Infrastructure ?

As digital economies expand and AI-driven risk models become more integrated into acquiring decisions, merchants in developing markets will need structured, stable, and compliant payment solutions more than ever.
<div Here we go over the brief technical side of this system.

Card Acquiring is the service that enables merchants/businesses to accept card payments.

In general, when you spend your money with your card, here is what actually happens:

Tap your card

Signal sent your bank (issuing bank) to check whether you have sufficient funds or credit, then approves transaction.

The payment is routed through a card network, most popular ones such as Visa or Mastercard.

The merchant’s acquiring bank receives the approval and guarantees the funds to the business.

The transaction is settled later, meaning the merchant receives the money - minus the agreed procession fees.

This simplified cycle takes a few seconds, however, involves risk checks, fraud screening, compliance monitoring and liquidity management behind the scenes.

For merchants, an efficient and well-integrated card acquiring system is its key to success! The world of payment solutions looks to constantly improves the card payment abilities of individual consumers through domestic and cross-border transactions, as quickly as possible.

As digital commerce has grown significantly and is projected to grow approximately $26 trillion by 2034, it is no secret that card acquiring is a foundational pillar of our global economy (Precedence Research, 2025). Furthermore, the overall payment procession solutions market is expected to grow to nearly $140 billion by 2032 (FintechFutures.com, 2024).

Thanks for reading Aquira's Substack! infrastructure — it is revenue continuity.

High-risk merchants need payment solutions that provide:

1. Stability
A stable acquiring setup reduces the risk of sudden account freezes or terminations that can disrupt cash flow.

2. Chargeback Management Expertise
Advanced fraud monitoring, intelligent routing, and dispute management tools help control risk while protecting margins.

3. Regulatory Alignment
Specialized providers understand industry-specific compliance requirements and structure solutions accordingly.

4. Scalability
As transaction volumes grow, payment architecture must scale without constant renegotiation or friction.

5. Strategic Partnership
Beyond simply “approving accounts,” experienced providers act as long-term partners, helping businesses optimize acceptance rates and operational efficiency.

The Value of the Right Partner

High risk merchants need structured, compliant, and resilient payment frameworks designed specifically for their industry profile.

This is where Aquira adds value.

At Aquira, we are a referral agent who specialise in high-risk payment solutions, focusing on three core principles:

1. Guided Onboarding
At Aquira we personally guide merchants through the onboarding and underwriting process, helping them prepare documentation properly, position their business correctly, and avoid unnecessary delays or rejections.

2. Stable, Long-Term Solutions
Our priority is not just approval — it is stability. We work to secure reliable acquiring relationships that minimise disruption, reduce the risk of sudden freezes, and create payment continuity.

3. Fair, Competitive Commission
High-risk processing is often associated with inflated fees. Aquira works to secure competitive terms and offers a commission structure that is lower than what is traditionally seen in the high-risk space.

With the right structure and the right partner, high-risk merchants can transform payments from a constant operational headache into a strategic advantage that supports long-term growth.

All in all Aquira saves your business all the headaches !

Subscribe now

Thanks for reading Aquira's Substack!
